Her face drains of color.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think I didn\u2019t hear the whispers?\u201d he says quietly. \u201cYou think the faculty didn\u2019t see this?\u201d<\/p>\n

She grips the paper harder. \u201cBut I worked so hard in your class!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did,\u201d he replies. \u201cThat\u2019s why this hurts.\u201d<\/p>\n

He opens a drawer and pulls out a thick folder. Every assignment she submitted. Every quiz. Every attendance record.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the beginning of the semester, you were one of my best students,\u201d he says. \u201cBut halfway through\u2026 your work changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looks away.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou stopped turning in complete assignments. Your exam scores dropped. You skipped group labs.\u201d He pauses. \u201cAnd every time I asked if something was wrong, you said you were fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her anger starts to crack.<\/p>\n

\u201cI stayed after class because I didn\u2019t understand anything anymore,\u201d she mutters.<\/p>\n

Silence fills the office.<\/p>\n

For the first time, his expression softens completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy didn\u2019t you tell anyone?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause everyone already thought I was getting special treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nods slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen let me be clear,\u201d he says. \u201cYou didn\u2019t fail because you\u2019re lazy. And you didn\u2019t get a C because I hate you.\u201d<\/p>\n

He taps the paper gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou got a C because that\u2019s the grade your work earned. But the fact you survived this semester at all?\u201d He gives a faint smile. \u201cThat\u2019s honestly impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wipes her eyes, embarrassed.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo\u2026 that\u2019s it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

He reaches for one last document.<\/p>\n

An application for a departmental scholarship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI already recommended you for emergency financial assistance.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stares at him in shock.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy would you do that after everything?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shrugs.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause contrary to internet rumors, my job is to help students succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time all day, she laughs \u2014 a small, broken laugh, but real.<\/p>\n

And as she leaves the office clutching the papers to her chest, she finally understands something:<\/p>\n
